ABCD English: a free ABC learning app for curious kids

ABCD English is a small, calm place for children ages three to six to meet the alphabet. Trace letters with Pip, hear words and first sounds, match uppercase and lowercase letters, and collect a sticker for every letter. It runs in the browser, needs no account, and is free to use.

What is inside the ABC learning app

Letter tracing for uppercase and lowercase letters

Every letter has a numbered, dotted path that shows where to start and which way to move. Children can trace with a finger, mouse, or stylus. A “Watch” button demonstrates the strokes, and the app gently tracks progress without a timer. When a letter is complete, the child sees a celebration and unlocks a sticker.

This is the most hands-on part of the app. It supports letter recognition, letter formation, and the confidence that comes from making a recognisable letter. Read our ABC letter tracing guide for ways to use it well.

Listen-and-find phonics

The phonics game says a familiar word, shows a picture, and offers three letters. The child chooses the letter that starts the word. Each of the eight rounds is short, with gentle feedback and a star for a correct answer. The spoken words connect print to sound, which is the heart of early phonics. Start with our phonics for kindergarten guide if you want the bigger picture.

Uppercase and lowercase matching

In the match-up game, children turn over cards to pair big letters with little letters. Six pairs keep the board manageable. The game counts flips, celebrates a completed board, and stores the child’s best score on the device. It is quiet, repeatable practice for letter recognition and visual memory.

A sticker book with 26 friends

Each letter is linked to a picture-word sticker, from Apple to Zebra. The first time a letter is traced, its sticker joins the collection. The sticker book gives children a visible record of their practice without turning the app into a competition.

A private grown-up corner

A simple addition gate keeps little fingers out of the adult area. Inside, a grown-up can see which uppercase and lowercase letters have been practised, how many stickers have been collected, and reset progress. Sound and voice can be muted there too.

Why this ABC learning app is different

Many children’s apps are built around attention rather than learning. ABCD English tries to do the opposite. The screens are calm, the choices are large, and there is no advertising, no account creation, and no pressure to keep playing.

  • Free and no ads. No promotions interrupt a child’s play.
  • No accounts or personal profiles. There is nothing to sign up for.
  • No in-app purchases. Every activity is available from the start.
  • Local progress. Stars, stickers, and letter progress stay in the browser on the device.
  • Works with touch, mouse, or stylus. The tracing canvas is designed for real fingers, not only a desktop.
  • Short activities. There are no timers or endless loops designed to keep a child scrolling.
  • Offline-friendly. After the first visit, the core experience can be cached for offline use.

The app uses the speech voice built into the browser or device for spoken words. Voices vary by device, and a grown-up can turn sound off at any time. The app never uses a microphone.

How to learn ABCD online

  1. Open the app. Tap “Start tracing” on the home screen. No account is needed.
  2. Choose one short activity. One or two tracing letters, one phonics round, or one matching game is plenty for a first visit.
  3. Sit nearby. Say the letter name, the sound, and one example word. Add the conversation that a screen cannot.
  4. Stop while it is still fun. Return another day. The sticker book will remember what has been collected on that device.
  5. Visit the grown-up corner. See the progress snapshot, mute sound, or reset the app when you want a fresh start.

A calmer kind of children’s app

ABCD English does not collect names, email addresses, or learning profiles. There are no advertising cookies, third-party analytics, or social widgets. Progress is stored in local storage in the browser; a grown-up can delete it with the reset button. You can read every detail in our privacy note.

The app is designed for a grown-up and child to use together, not as a substitute for care or teaching. A few minutes at a time is enough.
